Pantech Skate Phone

I led the art direction and animation on this stylized take on extreme sports videos for Pantech’s sponsorship of the Dew Tour. We follow the phone as it skates, snowboards, and surfs through three stylized 3d worlds.

The process began with our editor, Ryan McKenna, poring over sports videos to create an edit of all the moves the phone would do. Character animator translated all those moves into the animation of the phone in Maya. To establish the visual style I took the design team on a field trip to MOMA to see a exhibit on the work of cubist painter Lyonel Feininger. The designers crafted the three worlds inspired by Feininger’s illustration language, crafting intricate worlds full of detail and characters, while a team of artists worked in Cinema4d, Maya, Houdini, After Effects, and Nuke to complete the animation in just two weeks!

Stylistic Reference, Lyonel Feininger

Process

To translate the designers’ illustrations into 3d we used layered camera projections to project the textures onto simple geometry, allowing us to move in three-dimensions around their 2d worlds
